How does the crypto tax calculator for Finland work?
In Finland, profit from selling cryptocurrency is capital income. It is taxed at 30% up to €30,000 and at 34% on the part above that (2026 scale, based on all capital income for the year combined).
The calculator applies this two-step rate directly to the gain you enter. In reality the threshold applies to all your capital income together, not just crypto profits, so your final tax rate may differ from this estimate.
Instead of the actual purchase price, you can use the deemed acquisition cost: 20% of the sale price if you have held the asset for less than 10 years, and 40% if you have held it for at least 10 years. You can always choose it when it gives a better result, for example when the purchase price was very low or the receipts are lost (Verohallinto).
In practice the deemed cost is usually worse than the actual purchase price, so use it mainly when it really helps.
Crypto tax Finland: example calculations
| Situation | Purchase | Sale | Gain before tax | Estimated tax (30%) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small first purchase sold at a profit | €200 | €350 | €150 | €45 |
| Medium investment after a few years | €3,200 | €5,400 | €2,200 | €660 |
| Large sale above the €30,000 capital income threshold | €10,000 | €45,000 | €35,000 | €10,700 (30% + 34%) |
The last example shows the two-step rate in practice. The first €30,000 of gains is taxed at 30% and only the part above it at 34%. This applies only if you have no other capital income in the same year. If you also make share profits, for example, they are added to your crypto gains when the threshold is applied.

Crypto tax calculator Finland: frequently asked questions
Is a crypto-to-crypto swap calculated the same way as a sale for euros?
Yes. Swapping one crypto for another, for example bitcoin for ether, is a disposal for tax purposes, and the gain or loss is calculated in the same way as when selling for euros. Calculate each swap separately with the calculator, not as one combined total.
What if I sell crypto at a loss?
A loss is deducted first from capital gains in the same year and then from other capital income. Any part not deducted carries forward for the next five years (Verohallinto). Note that crypto lost in a scam, an exchange bankruptcy or a lost wallet cannot be deducted. The calculator is designed mainly for profitable sales, but it also works for losses: enter the purchase and sale price as usual to see the exact loss in euros.
Do I pay tax on crypto profit immediately or only when I withdraw money to my bank?
Tax liability arises at the moment of disposal, when you sell, swap or spend the crypto, not when you withdraw euros from the exchange to your bank account. Many people misunderstand this and find they owe tax before they have moved a single euro to their account.
Do I have to report every single crypto trade separately in OmaVero?
Not necessarily. In OmaVero you can report sales one by one or the whole year at once. If you report the whole year at once, attach a calculation that itemises every sale, and report profitable and loss-making sales as separate calculations (Tax Administration's OmaVero instructions, in Finnish). With many transactions this is laborious by hand, which is why many people use a tax report service such as Divly.
Will crypto taxation in Finland change in the coming years?
From the 2026 tax year, crypto service providers report their customers' transactions to the Tax Administration under the EU's DAC8 directive and the international CARF framework, with the first reports due in January 2027 (Verohallinto). The Tax Administration also issued new guidance on crypto-assets on 18 December 2025. The tax rates and the deemed acquisition cost rules are unchanged (as of October 2026), and we will update the calculator if they change.
