How buying, selling and withdrawing usually work on Coinmotion
Coinmotion's trading fee is tiered by your previous trading volume, so a new account usually pays the highest tier. Compare the price you get with the market price of bitcoin at the time of purchase. When you sell bitcoin back to euros, the withdrawal is made as a SEPA transfer that typically arrives in your bank account on the next banking day. Check the current fees in the service's price list.
How to open a Coinmotion account
Account opening is done with strong electronic identification. The steps are:
- Sign up with your email address and a password on Coinmotion's website, and confirm your email via the link you receive.
- Verify your identity with Finnish online banking credentials or a mobile certificate. Coinmotion performs the KYC check automatically for most Finnish banks.
- Fill in the background information: source of funds, investment experience and expected use. This is part of the customer due diligence required by anti-money laundering law.
- Make your first SEPA deposit from your own bank account. The deposit is free and usually appears on the same or the next banking day.
- Buy your first cryptocurrency. The trading view is straightforward and orders execute in seconds.
The whole journey from sign-up to first purchase can usually be done in one session, as long as bank identification goes smoothly. If you have recently moved to Finland and don't yet have Finnish online banking credentials, check the service's other identification options before you start; see also buying crypto without Finnish bank ID.
Coinmotion fees
Coinmotion's trading fee is no longer a fixed percentage. It is tiered by your trading volume over the previous 90 days, which the system recalculates every minute. The starting level is 2.0%, and the fee falls as your 90-day volume grows, down to 0.8% once your volume exceeds one million euros. Coins in Coinmotion's "extended selection" (marked with * in the price list) always have a fixed 2.0% fee regardless of volume and do not count towards discounts on other trades. Customers registered in Sweden pay a fixed 2.9%, except those who joined before 19 November 2025, who keep the Finnish pricing.
| Previous 90-day volume | Trading fee |
|---|---|
| Under €500 (default) | 2.0% |
| Over €500 | 1.8% |
| Over €2,000 | 1.6% |
| Over €10,000 | 1.4% |
| Over €50,000 | 1.2% |
| Over €250,000 | 1.0% |
| Over €1,000,000 | 0.8% |
Note: the tiers are based on a rolling 90-day volume, not the size of a single purchase. That is why a new account always pays the starting tier until volume builds up.
| Deposits & withdrawals | Price |
|---|---|
| SEPA deposit | €0 |
| SEPA withdrawal to your bank account | €0.90 / transfer |
| Crypto transfer within Coinmotion | €0 |
| Receiving crypto | €0 |
| Sending crypto to your own wallet | Network fee |
| Säilö cold storage service | €3.00 / month / currency |
The price list also includes a number of less common extra charges, for example investigating an unclear deposit, a contact details update request or posting a document (about €10 each), redirecting a transfer sent to the wrong XLM/XRP address (10% of the amount, up to €200), a custody fee for a frozen or closed account (9.90% per year), returning funds from a closed account (€150/hour, minimum €150), a consulting fund recovery service (from €250/hour) and a separate report or certificate (from €200/hour, minimum €100). These charges include 25.5% VAT. The full current price list is in Coinmotion's help centre.

Security and custody
Coinmotion says it keeps most customer funds in cold storage, meaning offline wallets. The company was on the FIN-FSA register of virtual currency providers from 2019 until the register was replaced by MiCA licences. As outsiders, we cannot verify the exact custody shares ourselves; this information is based on the company's own statement.
Is Coinmotion safe and reliable?
We assess reliability through four concrete signals:
- Track record: Coinmotion has operated in Finland since 2012, longer than any other Finnish crypto exchange, with no publicly known insolvency or theft incidents.
- Regulation: Coinmotion Oy received a licence under the EU MiCA Regulation from the FIN-FSA on 2 July 2025 (source: ESMA's MiCA register, checked 5 October 2026). Before that, the company had been on the FIN-FSA register of virtual currency providers since 2019.
- Custody: according to the company, most customer funds are held in cold storage off its servers.
- Transparency: the price list is public and has no hidden costs, so you can compare the price you pay with the market price at the time of purchase.
None of this removes the market risk of cryptocurrencies. The reliability of an exchange and the price risk of what you buy are two separate things. Choosing a regulated exchange is not enough on its own either; also read our guide to crypto scams in Finland.
Who is Coinmotion best for?
Coinmotion suits users who value a long track record and Finnish-language support more than the lowest possible trading fee. If you actively trade large volumes, weigh the tiered pricing against Northcrypto's lighter fee structure. If you prefer to use the service in English, check that the app and support work for you before depositing larger amounts.
How to buy crypto on Coinmotion
- Log in and make sure your account has funds (a SEPA deposit usually appears the same banking day).
- Choose the cryptocurrency you want to buy in the trading view, for example bitcoin or Ethereum.
- Enter the amount in euros. The system shows the estimated amount of crypto and the fee before you confirm.
- Confirm the order. It is executed at market price, usually within seconds.
- The purchase appears in your portfolio immediately, and you can move it to your own wallet if you wish.
How to sell crypto on Coinmotion
- Open the portfolio view and select the cryptocurrency you want to sell.
- Enter the amount either in crypto or in euros; both work.
- Confirm the sale. The selling fee follows the same 0.8–2.0% tiers as buying, based on your previous 90-day trading volume.
- The euros from the sale stay in your Coinmotion account as a cash balance.
- Request a withdrawal to your bank account. A normal SEPA transfer usually arrives within 1–2 banking days; check the withdrawal fee in the price list.
Remember: in Finland a sale is a taxable disposal, and so is a crypto-to-crypto swap. See the tax section below.
Coinmotion: pros and cons
- Finland's longest-running crypto exchange (since 2012)
- Free SEPA deposit, withdrawal only €0.90 per transfer
- Customer support in Finnish and Swedish
- Transparent price list without hidden spread costs
- Transaction history can be downloaded for tax calculations
- The starting trading fee (2.0%) is clearly higher than at the cheapest competitors; the lowest 0.8% requires more than €1 million in 90-day volume
- Smaller selection than international exchanges
- Mobile app not at the level of the largest international players
Coinmotion user experiences 2026
We went through public user feedback, including app store reviews and discussion forums. Recurring themes:
- Positive: the long track record is seen as trustworthy, Finnish-language support is often mentioned, and SEPA transfers work within the promised time.
- Critical: the trading fee is considered high for small amounts compared with the cheapest competitors, and some users would like a wider coin selection.
Overall, the service is seen as reliable and predictable, but it is not the cheapest option in euro terms.
Coinmotion and taxes in Finland
Coinmotion does not withhold taxes for you. You report capital gains and losses from crypto to the Finnish Tax Administration yourself in your annual tax return.
| Event | Tax consequence |
|---|---|
| Selling crypto for euros | Capital gain or loss, capital income tax (30% / 34%) |
| Crypto-to-crypto swap (e.g. BTC → ETH) | Treated as a disposal, taxable event |
| Leaving euros on the exchange account | Does not defer tax – a sale for euros is a disposal immediately, even if the money is not withdrawn to a bank (Verohallinto) |
| Deemed acquisition cost | 20% (or 40% if held over 10 years) if the actual purchase price is not used |
Kryptoluotsi.com does not provide tax advice. Coinmotion's transaction history can be downloaded from your account as a CSV file, which makes it easier to use our crypto tax calculator. The full rules are in our guide to crypto taxes in Finland.
Coinmotion review: frequently asked questions
Is Coinmotion a safe choice?
Coinmotion holds a MiCA licence granted by the Finnish Financial Supervisory Authority and has operated in Finland since 2012. A long, unbroken track record is one of the strongest things an outsider can assess, but it does not remove the market risk of cryptocurrencies.
Can I withdraw crypto from Coinmotion to my own wallet?
Yes. You can withdraw crypto from Coinmotion to your own external wallet address. Check the withdrawal fee and any minimum amounts in the price list before the transfer.
How much does Coinmotion cost?
Opening and keeping an account is free. The trading fee is tiered by your previous 90-day volume from 2.0% down to 0.8%, and SEPA deposits are free. A SEPA withdrawal to your bank account costs €0.90 per transfer. See the fee section above or Coinmotion's own price list for details.
In which languages does Coinmotion offer customer support?
Coinmotion's customer support is available in Finnish and Swedish by phone, email and chat on weekdays. This is one of its clearest differences from international competitors, whose support is often only in English and behind a ticket queue. If you need support in English, check the current options on Coinmotion's website.
How many cryptocurrencies can I trade on Coinmotion?
The selection is clearly smaller than on the international giants. Coinmotion focuses on the best-known, most liquid coins alongside BTC and ETH rather than offering hundreds of small altcoins. This is a deliberate choice that reduces scam and liquidity risk but limits your options.
Can taxes be handled automatically with Coinmotion?
Coinmotion does not calculate your taxable gains for you, but you can download your transaction history and import it into a crypto tax service such as Divly, which automates the calculation of acquisition costs and capital gains from several sources at once.
Is Coinmotion suitable for active day trading?
Not really. The trading fee is higher than on many platforms designed for active trading, and advanced order types and leverage are not available. Coinmotion is built for long-term, less frequent trading and secure custody.
