Is Coinbase available in Finland?
Yes. Coinbase serves customers in Finland through Coinbase Luxembourg S.A., which is licensed under the EU's MiCA Regulation by the Luxembourg regulator CSSF. A MiCA licence covers the whole EU, so Coinbase can legally offer its services in Finland without a separate Finnish licence. Read more about the rules in is crypto legal in Finland.
Coinbase app or Advanced Trade – which should you choose?
In practice, Coinbase appears to users as two different products. The standard app (Coinbase "Simple") is designed to be as easy as possible: the price includes a pricing margin of about 0.5%, and a separate payment method fee is added on top.
Advanced Trade, by contrast, shows a transparent maker/taker price list without a hidden margin, but you need to be comfortable with an order-book trading view.
Both work with the same account and the same funds, but the price difference is so large that the choice really matters.
Why the same purchase costs different amounts in different Coinbase views
Coinbase has two ways to buy: a simple purchase and Advanced Trade. A simple purchase includes a pricing margin and possibly a payment method fee, whereas Advanced Trade charges a clearly lower trading fee. The difference can be several times larger, and it comes purely from the interface you choose. Check the current fees in Coinbase's price list.
How to open a Coinbase account in Finland
Registration is an international process and does not use Finnish online banking identification, which makes Coinbase one of the options for people who have just moved to Finland:
- Create an account with your email or a Google/Apple account in the Coinbase app or on the website.
- Verify your identity by uploading an identity document and taking a selfie. The automated verification often confirms your identity in the same session.
- Answer background questions about the source of your funds and intended use.
- Make a SEPA deposit to your euro balance. A SEPA transfer typically arrives within a banking day.
- Choose the Simple or Advanced Trade view and make your first purchase – see above for which suits your goal.

Coinbase fees in Finland
Coinbase's price list is unusually two-tiered compared with Finnish exchanges, which have one unified trading fee:
| Product / event | Fee | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Simple app, pricing margin | ~0.5% | According to Coinbase, can be higher during volatility |
| Simple app, paying with EUR balance/SEPA | 1.49% | Added on top of the margin |
| Simple app, paying by card | 3.99% | Added on top of the margin |
| Advanced Trade, maker | From 0.60% | Falls with monthly volume, down to 0% at high volumes |
| Advanced Trade, taker | From 1.20% | Falls with monthly volume, down to about 0.05% |
| SEPA deposit / withdrawal | €0 | Withdrawal limit €100,000/day |
Note: the Advanced Trade tiers and their volume thresholds have changed during 2026, and Coinbase may update them without separate notice. Always check the current price list on Coinbase's own help page before trading.

Coinbase in brief
Coinbase is one of the world's largest listed crypto exchanges, and its EU operations have been MiCA-licensed from Luxembourg since 2025.
The selection is wide (over 200 cryptocurrencies) and the security reputation strong, but the pricing can get expensive if you always buy in the Simple app instead of switching to Advanced Trade.
In this sense Coinbase resembles eToro: an international, multi-layered platform where it pays to study the pricing carefully before buying, unlike the single price list model of Coinmotion or Northcrypto.
Security and custody
Coinbase says it keeps about 98% of customer funds in cold storage off its servers, and the company has commercial insurance (according to Coinbase, around $320 million) that covers technical breaches of cold and hot storage, not a user's own leaked credentials.
Coinbase is also SOC 1 and SOC 2 Type II audited. We cannot verify the cold storage share ourselves, but we have no reason to doubt Coinbase's own statement.
Is Coinbase reliable?
- MiCA licence: Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. received a crypto-asset service licence from Luxembourg's CSSF in June 2025. This is an EU-wide licence, not just a national registration.
- Long, listed history: founded in 2012 and listed on Nasdaq in 2021. A public company's reporting obligations bring a level of transparency that private players don't have.
- Past incidents: Coinbase's own systems have avoided major theft cases, but the company has reported individual account takeovers where the user's own authentication (for example through a SIM swap scam) was compromised. This concerns users' own security, not Coinbase's systems.
Exchange regulation and price risk are two different things: even a regulated exchange does not remove the market risk of cryptocurrencies. See also our guide to crypto scams in Finland.
Who is Coinbase best for?
Coinbase suits users who value the selection of an international giant and the transparency of a listed company, and who are willing to learn Advanced Trade to keep costs reasonable.
If you only want a simple, one-off small purchase and the price difference doesn't matter, the Simple app is enough. Because Coinbase works fully in English and does not require Finnish bank identification, it is a practical choice for many internationals living in Finland. If you want Finnish-language support or one fixed price list, a Finnish exchange is often more straightforward.
How to buy crypto on Coinbase
- Log in and make sure you have a euro balance in your account.
- In the Simple view, choose the cryptocurrency and amount. The fee shown includes the margin and the payment method fee.
- For a better price, switch to Advanced Trade and place a limit or market order in the order book.
- Confirm the order. A market order is usually executed within a few seconds.
- The purchase appears in your portfolio immediately and can be moved to your own wallet.

- Open your portfolio and select the cryptocurrency you want to sell.
- Enter the amount. The Simple and Advanced Trade views have the same fee differences as when buying.

Coinbase user experiences 2026
We went through public user feedback, including Trustpilot reviews. These themes recur:
- Positive: the clarity of the app, the trust that comes with a well-known brand and the wide selection come up often.
- Critical: account freezes or requests for additional information, repeated KYC checks and slow customer support are mentioned often, as is the high fee of the Simple app.
Coinbase taxes in Finland
Coinbase does not withhold taxes for you. From the 2026 tax year, crypto service providers in the EU report their customers' transactions to tax authorities (Verohallinto), but you still have to report capital gains and losses yourself in your annual tax return.
| Event | Tax consequence |
|---|---|
| Selling crypto for euros | Capital gain or loss, capital income tax 30% / 34% |
| Crypto-to-crypto swap (e.g. BTC → ETH) | Treated as a disposal, taxable event |
| Deemed acquisition cost | 20% (40% if held over 10 years) if the actual purchase price is not used |
Coinbase's transaction history can be downloaded from your account as a CSV file. This is not tax advice; see our guide to crypto taxes in Finland.
Coinbase in Finland: frequently asked questions
Is Coinbase legal and regulated in Finland?
Yes. EU customers are served by Coinbase Luxembourg S.A., which received a MiCA crypto-asset service licence from the Luxembourg regulator CSSF in June 2025. The licence covers the whole EU, including Finland.
Why is the Coinbase Simple app more expensive than Advanced Trade?
The Simple app prices trades with an internal margin (about 0.5%) and adds a separate payment method fee on top (1.49% with a euro balance, 3.99% by card). Advanced Trade shows a transparent maker/taker price list without this margin: same account, different interface, clearly different price.
Can I open a Coinbase account in Finland without Finnish bank ID?
Yes. Coinbase verifies your identity with an identity document and a selfie instead of Finnish online banking credentials. To deposit euros you still need a bank account that can make SEPA transfers.
Can I withdraw crypto from Coinbase to my own wallet?
Yes, withdrawals to an external, self-custody wallet address work like on any exchange, for a network fee. Check the processing time and fee in the service before a larger transfer.
How many cryptocurrencies can I trade on Coinbase?
The selection is wide, over 200 cryptocurrencies depending on the market region, and clearly wider than at Finnish exchanges. Not every coin is available in every region at the same time, so check availability in your own account before buying.
